Food of the week -QUINOA

  • Although referred to as a grain, it is actually a seed from a vegetable related to Swiss chard, spinach and beets. Quinoa is pronounced keen-wa not kwin-o-a.

  • Quick cooking, gluten-free whole grain.

  • Quinoa grows in a rainbow of colours, but the most commonly available are red quinoa, black quinoa and white quinoa.

  • Has the perfect balance of all nine amino acids essential for human nutrition. This type of complete protein is rarely found in plant foods, although common in meats. Quinoa also offers a good dose of fibre and iron.

  • Quinoa can be useful in part of a healthy diet for weight loss. It is high in protein, which can both increase metabolism and reduce appetite significantly.The high amount of fibre should also help to increase feelings of fullness, making us eat fewer calories overall.
